“Omni-learning,” which continuously and digitally integrates all real and virtual learning sites – classroom, workplace, customers’ premises, and beyond – is the future of executive education, according to IESE Business School. Drs. Guiseppe Auricchio and Evgeny Káganer, directors of IESE’s Learning Innovation Unit, recently published a position paper titled “The Road to Omni-Learning: How Digitalization is Changing the Way Executives Learn,” in which they propose that elearning is already a relic.

According to Auricchio, many organizations are investing time and resources into alternative learning processes, treating online learning as a way to gain efficiency, rather than to improve learning effectiveness. The position paper identifies three key features of omni-learning:

  • Continuous and Cross-Context – Learning must be part of an executive’s everyday activities rather than a standalone event. The range of an executive’s activities, including physical and virtual learning contexts, spans all the places and situations the executive encounters, which all need to be captured and integrated.
  • Learner-Led – In omni-learning, participants identify and integrate learning moments themselves, making choices that personalize their journey to individual needs. (In formal learning, the lecturer or learning designer preselects pathways and learning experiences.)
  • Data-driven – Learner-led moments from everyday situations generate a data footprint, to be captured, stored, and analyzed to monitor each learner’s performance and personalize tasks. Data is not just a record of past activity, but is available to guide future choices.

While omni-learning is not yet in practice, IESE Executive Education is working with a client on some aspects of omni-learning logic, connecting in-class learning with external learning moments, allowing executives to integrate what they are reading or observing back into the program. The physical and online activities of all users are aggregated for mutual benefit.
