The face of executive education is undergoing major changes, with traditional providers being challenged by new entrants into this market. Strategy and recruitment consultancies, publishing companies, and even technology start-ups are entering this $70 billion-per-year global market. These new providers of executive education may result from acquisitions or alliances, or they may arise from universities’ engineering schools, medical schools, law schools, or continuing education divisions.

In addition, some companies that have traditionally utilized executive education services at business schools are setting up corporate universities, sometimes with the assistance of schools and professors. Some companies call these “academies.”

Other trends in the field include a move toward shorter courses and toward custom programs rather than open enrollment programs, and the need for programs that award a certificate or diploma (especially in Asian markets). The use of online technology is rising as well, due to the lower price point and schedule flexibility.

According to Dominique Turpin, president of IMD in Switzerland, “The only way we can survive is to be innovative and relevant.”
