The MIT Media Lab, founded in 1985 to focus on media arts and sciences, works to invent – and reinvent – how humans experience and can be aided by technology. Its current focus is on “human adaptability, ” from treating Alzheimer’s and depression to robots that can monitor the health of children or the elderly, and the development of smart prostheses that can mimic the capabilities of biological limbs.

The MIT Media Lab also offers Special Interest Groups (SIGs) that deal with particular subject areas. These smaller, more-focused groups include:

* Advanced Wellbeing – addresses the role of technology in shaping our health, exploring new approaches and solutions to wellbeing
* CE 2.0 – explores consumer electronics (CE) devices and how we interact with them
* Connection Science – aims to revolutionize technology-mediated human networks through analysis, prediction, data-driven design, and evaluation
* Digital Currency Initiative – cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and how they enable entrepreneurs and technologists to build applications that answer the demand for global transactions
* Emerging Worlds – focuses on emerging opportunities to address pressing challenges and leapfrog existing solutions
* Ethics Initiative – aims to foster multidisciplinary program designs and critical conversations around ethics, wellbeing, and human flourishing
* Future of News – designs, tests, and makes creative tools to help newsrooms move ahead
* Learning Learning – explores new approaches to learning across dimensions, from early childhood to lifelong scholarship
* Open Agriculture (OpenAG) – focuses on ways to create healthier, more engaging, more inventive future food systems
* Pixel Factory – works to help people understand data by making tools that transform data into stories
