Managers at McDonald’s Canada Can Earn College Credit

Managers at McDonald’s Canada will now be able to earn college credit. Individuals who complete two courses at one of the restaurant’s training institutes, along with a combination of on-the-job experience, readings, and workbooks activities, can qualify for advanced placement, bypassing the first two years of a business or business administration diploma at Ontario’s 24 public colleges. Employees in other provinces are also eligible to participate, through online studies offered by Ontario colleges.

Those involved in this partnership call it a triple win, benefiting the corporation, college, and employees. Alan Middleton, Executive Director of the Schulich Executive Education Centre at York University’s School of Business, notes, “I see it as a win-win if it turns around the long decline in not spending the time or money upgrading the skills of our people.”

The program means that all of the approximately 12,000 managers at McDonald’s Canada could chose to pursue higher education. Sharon Ramalho, McDonald’s Canada Chief People Officer, says the company has a “vested interest in making sure that we help our people educate themselves, that we train, that we teach.”

Colleges Ontario spent three years reviewing the McDonald’s training, and found that it covers some of the same skills employees might learn in business school, such as marketing and leading teams. Linda Franklin, President and CEO of Colleges Ontario, comments that this arrangement may help colleges attract more students who might have considered multiple years of schooling a big hurdle.
