Keysight Technologies Joins 6G Flagship Program

Keysight Technologies announced this week that it has joined the multiparty 6G Flagship Program as a co-creator to advance wireless communications research beyond 5G.

The 6G Flagship Program, supported by the Academy of Finland and led by the University of Oulu, Finland, is an eight-year program envisioning a world by 2030 that is data-driven and enabled by nearly instantaneous, unlimited wireless connectivity. 6G will build on and expand expected 5G capabilities to deliver for vertical industries relying on connectivity – energy, healthcare, manufacturing, public safety and transportation.

Satish Dhanasekaran, Senior Vice President of Keysight and President of Keysight’s Communications Solutions Group, says, “We’re excited to join the 6G Flagship Program as one of its founding members to begin groundbreaking 6G research. The program signals the start of a new era of wireless technology that will push the boundaries of high-speed and high-bandwidth applications. As the only test and measurement provider invited to take part in the program, Keysight is showcasing the unique role we play in solving design challenges ahead of a technology wave.”

Dhanasekaran has been with Keysight since its inception in 2014. Prior to that, he worked at Agilent Technologies for more than eight years and at Motorola Mobile Devices for six years. He earned a master of science degree in electrical engineering from Florida State University completed The Wharton School’s Executive Development Program.

Keysight’s research capabilities, along with its wide range of software and hardware for design, simulation, and validation, should assist the program in accomplishing its goals.

Matti Latva-aho, Academy Professor, Director of the 6G Flagship Program at the Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) at the University of Oulu, comments, “We’re excited to continue our close collaboration with Keysight to establish the world’s first 6G multidisciplinary research initiative with broad support in both industry and academia.”

Wireless communication beyond 5G is expected to leverage the spectrum above millimeter waves called terahertz waves, from 300 GHz to 3THz, frequencies forming an important component in delivering data rates of up to one tera bit per second and very low latencies. The increased speed and bandwidth mean that anything that people use network connections for today will be greatly improved on a 6G network. Keysight’s expertise and solutions across these frequency bands is expected to accelerate research in the four strategic areas of the 6G Flagship Program: wireless connectivity, distributed intelligent wireless computing, device and circuit technologies, and vertical applications and services.
