Annenberg Welcomes Top Scholars on Impact of Internet on Culture

The University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication recently welcomed two visiting scholars, Kelly Gates and Sonia Livingstone, for the Fall 2015 semester as part of its Scholars Program in Culture and Communication.

Kelly Gates, University of California, San Diego Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and the Science Studies Program, specializes in the study of digital media, surveillance, and visual culture. Her book Our Biometric Future: Facial Recognition Technology and the Culture of Surveillance, addresses the automation of facial recognition and facial expression analysis and how its application in policing, security, and social media affect measurement. Her current research focuses on forensic video analysis and how new visual imaging and archiving technologies are transforming investigatory and evidentiary practices. She will teach Materialistic Media Studies at Annenberg.

Sonia Livingstone is a Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at the London School of Economics, where she teaches master’s courses in media and communications theory, methods, and audiences and supervises doctoral students. She has written or edited 19 books as well as academic articles and chapters. Her research focuses on why and how the changing conditions of mediation are reshaping everyday practices and possibilities for action, identity, and communication rights. Her work examines the opportunities and risks digital and online technologies afford, including for children and young people She was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2014 ‘for services to children and child internet safety.’ She will teach Media Audiences at Annenberg.
