Wonder Woman at the Harvard Fogg Museum

For the June 21, 2017 Gallery Talk at Harvard Fogg Museum, the focus was Wonder Woman. Amy Brauer, the Diane Heath Beever Curator of the Collection in the Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art, and Ilka Voermann, the Renke and Pamela M. Thye Curatorial Fellow in the Bush-Reisinger Museum, led the talk.

Participants in the Gallery Talk viewed Sarcophagus Sections with Men Fighting Amazons, on exhibit at the Harvard Fogg Museum. Depicting the clash between men and Amazons, it does not have a dominating hero or obvious outcome but tests the boundaries between male and female, civilization and barbarism, and human reality and myth.

During the Gallery Talk, Brauer and Voermann mentioned Jill Lepore’s The Secret History of Wonder Woman. Published in 2014, The Secret History of Wonder Woman explores the origin of Wonder Woman and how that ties into 20th century feminism. Jill Lepore uncovered documents such as the private papers of William Moulton Marston, creator of Wonder Woman. Lepore argues that Wonder Woman is the missing link in the history of the struggle for women’s rights.
