Verizon Gives $50 Million to Cornell Tech for Executive Education Center

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Verizon has given a $50 million gift to Cornell Tech to support the development of the Verizon Executive Education Center on the new Roosevelt Island campus. The center, which will be part of the campus’s first phase, will provide a gathering space for the tech community.

Verizon has partnered with Cornell for decades, recruiting students into internships and full-time positions, as well as offering philanthropic support. This gift will facilitate direct collaboration between companies and Cornell Tech students to bring cutting-edge ideas to market. Programs and events at the center will allow Verizon to develop customized programs for executives and customers, facilitating learning across many sectors.

Construction began last month on Cornell Tech’s Roosevelt Island campus and is due to open in summer of 2017. The new executive education center will open at a later date than the rest of construction phase one. This phase will include the first academic building, designed by architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architects, which includes an open plan and collaborative workspaces and is anticipated to be among the largest net-zero energy buildings in the United States, with all of its power generated on campus.

The campus also will include a corporate co-location building, which will fuse academia and industry by providing space on campus for established tech companies and startups. This building is designed by Weiss/Manfredi and developed by Forest City Ratner Companies. Finally, a residential building designed by Handel Architects and developed by Hudson and Related Companies will house faculty, staff, and students. The fully completed campus will span 12 acres on Roosevelt Island, housing about 2,000 students and hundreds of faculty and staff. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed the campus master plan with James Corner Field Operations.
