University of Miami President Receives Bouchet Award
Earlier this year, University of Miami President Julio Frenk received the Bouchet Award, a prestigious honor named for the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. in the United States.
In his keynote address at the 13th annual Bouchet Conference on Diversity and Graduate Education, Frenk commented on diversity, one of the core issues defining his presidency at the University of Miami, “Nearly 100 years after Bouchet’s death, the pipeline for faculty of color remains too narrow, the ranks of African-American scholars too thin. This is a challenge that all of us in higher education must address together.”
Dr. Frenk became the sixth president of the University of Miami on August 16, 2015, and also holds academic appointments as Professor of Public Health Sciences at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and as Professor of Health Sector Management and Policy at the School of Business Administration. Before joining the University of Miami, he served as dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the T & G Angelopoulos Professor of Public Health and International Development, a joint appointment with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
Frenk served as Mexico’s Minister of Health from 2000 to 2006, pursuing an agenda to reform the nation’s health system and introducing a program of comprehensive universal coverage. He was the founding director-general of the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico and served as executive director in charge of Evidence and Information for Policy at the World Health Organization, and as senior fellow in the global health program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A fourth-generation physician, Dr. Frenk holds a medical degree from the National University of Mexico and a Master of Public Health, and a joint Ph.D. in Medical Care Organization and Sociology from the University of Michigan.
