The Center for Global Sustainability at the University of Maryland provides information for global, national, and local discussions on climate, economic development, energy, and sustainability.

The Center’s international policy expertise, research network, connections with key countries, and Washington, DC, location, enhance its impact on national and global policy processes. The Center focuses on four topical areas that are strengths of the University of Maryland: Climate Policy, Energy Pathways, Health & Ecosystems, and Adaptation & Resilience.

* Climate Policy – Focuses on practical assessment of national actions and global emissions trajectories in the context of the international climate regime, which requires support for the development and evaluations of national targets and assessment of the aggregate targets in the context of long-term emissions goals.

* Energy Pathways – Focuses on accelerating the development and deployment of clean energy technologies, including assessing emerging technologies, effective policies, and financing models to support their development and deployment domestically and in diverse development contexts.

* Health & Ecosystems – Focuses on co-benefits, development, forestry, and finance to identify and develop implementation options for communities and countries, utilizing the university’s scientific capabilities in areas including agriculture, ecosystem services, forests, health, and land-use change.

* Adaptation & Resilience – Focuses on mainstreaming resilience considerations into sectoral, local, and national policies, integrating evidence-based design and more systematic approaches to project assessment and prioritization.

Nathan Hultman, Director of the Center for Global Sustainability and Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, is also Associate Director of the Joint Global Change Research Institute and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. His research focuses on national climate target-setting and assessment, U.S. emissions mitigation policy, energy technology transitions in emerging economies, and international climate policy.
