Thunderbird School of Global Management Begins Building New Headquarters, Part of Global Expansion

Arizona State University’s Thunderbird School of Global Management is set to begin construction of a new five-story high-tech headquarters, which will be the centerpiece of a strategic global expansion, in downtown Phoenix.

This is part of the “Reinventing Thunderbird” initiative, led by Dr. Sanjeev Khagram, Director General and Dean of Thunderbird. The school’s founding mission will remain to bring peace to the world through free trade and commerce. Khagram says, “Having a permanent global headquarters located in the heart of America’s fifth-largest and fastest-growing city allows us to provide our students with even more new educational experiences across sectors and disciplines. T-birds have new opportunities to collaborate with corporate, governmental, and nonprofit organizations that have a presence in downtown Phoenix.”

The goal of Thunderbird’s expansion is to have 20 global centers in major cities across the world by 2025; it currently has eight hubs. The school’s new Executive Master of Global Leadership and Strategy, designed for senior managers and executives who aim to reach the C-suite, will take students around the world in one year, with one-week modules in Phoenix/Los Angeles, Geneva, Mumbai, Shanghai, Nairobi, and Sao Paulo.

Acquired by Arizona State University (ASU) four years ago, the 73-year-old institution’s headquarters will be in the middle of the university’s downtown campus. The building will have technology allowing students, visiting leaders, government officials, and others to “meet” and collaborate in real time on a global scale. The Innovation Center will include a global situation room, virtual-reality suites, and cutting-edge language-immersion technologies. In addition, there will be a rooftop pub, a tribute to the original Thunderbird Pub at the school’s Glendale location.

Groundbreaking for the new building is scheduled for October 7, 2019, and ASU President Michael Crow and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego will be present. Gallego comments, “Thunderbird expanding its presence in downtown Phoenix is about more than just a new building – it is about tapping into Phoenix’s position as a global city. Every day our city is attracting more companies that compete on an international scale and Thunderbird is training the next generation of these global business leaders.”

The new building is scheduled to open in 2021, the year of Thunderbird’s 75th anniversary.
