SDA Bocconi New GEMBA Director Says Globalization and EdTech Are The Future of Executive Education

Ferdinando Pennarola, SDA Bocconi School of Management’s new Director of Global Executive Education, recently shared with the BusinessBecause.com site his vision for the Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) program, as well as unique characteristics that set it apart.

SDA Bocconi’s GEMBA is a 20-month blended program that incorporates learning abroad. Of the 25 current program participants, 20 nationalities are represented, and Milan offers stellar networking and career opportunities. Pennarola notes that this is the only GEMBA program in Milan, as well as the only GEMBA that includes two modules in Asia, first to Mumbai and then to Shanghai. In addition, SDA Bocconi’s location in the capital of fashion, food, and design makes it an added value for executive in those industries.

According to Pennarola, both Bocconi and the GEMBA program aim to provide the most accurate and effective learning possible, and will continue to adapt to technological developments in education. He called Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) the “next frontier,” as Bocconi works to engage people more. He sees such advances as more of an opportunity than a threat to the traditional teaching methods. He did stress that when they use online technologies, they only do so where they can bring added value.

Pennarola’s vision for the future of the GEMBA program includes strengthening networks with other schools and corporation and offering a more diverse approach to global executive issues. He has designed a new course structure for the program, built around a different sequence of modules and geographic locations.
