President Obama Announces New Program to Support Senior Executive Service

Screen Shot 2014-12-19 at 12.04.54 PMPresident Obama recently announced three new initiatives to support federal senior leaders: the Leadership Development Program for Future Senior Career Executives, an Advisory Group on Senior Executive Service (SES) Reform, and the Customer Service Awards Program.

The Leadership Development Program for Future Senior Career Executives, beginning in 2015, will offer potential SES members rotating assignments in various agencies. Experts in the field, such as Brookings Institution and McKinsey & Co., agree that mobility greatly enhances leadership development and should be more widely used.

Composed of senior-level managers and individuals in line for the executive corps, the Advisory Group on Senior Executive Service Reform will provide advice on recruiting, developing and retaining civil servants. Finally, the Customer Service Awards Program will honor employees for “outstanding achievement” in public service.

The Senior Executive Service is comprised of members who serve in key positions just below top Presidential appointees. They are the major link between these appointees and the rest of the Federal workforce, and they operate and oversee nearly every government activity in approximately 75 Federal agencies.
