Penn Wharton China Center Dedication and Gala Celebration

The Penn Wharton China Center (PWCC), located in the Central Business District of Beijing, is holding a dedication and gala celebration September 10th. The Center, launched in March 2015, is designed to serve as a bridge between Penn and China, “facilitating bilateral collaboration and advancing the University’s commitment to inclusion, innovation, and impact at the local, national, and global levels as described in Penn Compact 2020.”

The September 10th Silfen Forum and Gala Celebration of Penn in China, to be held at the Park Hyatt Beijing, will focus on the centrality of China and the United States in shaping political, economic, technological, and social developments in the Asia-Pacific sphere, and globally, in the 21st century. Panelists include Amy Gutmann, President and Christopher H. Browne Professor of Political Science in the School of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Communication in the Annenberg School for Communication; Howard Marks, Co-Chairman, Oaktree Capital Management LLC; General Colin Powell (Ret.), former U.S. Secretary of State; Zhang Xin, CEO and Co-Founder, SOHO China Ltd.; and Li Zhaoxing, Former Minister of the PRC.

According to Z. John Zhang, Wharton Professor of Marketing and Faculty Director of the Center, “To really understand China up close and give our students a really complete experience, we need to go there, we need to have a facility.” The PWCC will be a nucleus for researchers, students, and alumni studying or conducting research in China, and will facilitate the exchange of knowledge between China and Penn’s faculty, students, and alumni.

The state-of-the-art PWCC facility will include a classroom and a telepresence, so researchers, students, and alumni can connect with people around the world. It will be staffed by four full-time employees, who will help researchers with tasks such as making connections in the country and conducting literature searches in Chinese. The Center should benefit the entire University of Pennsylvania campus, in all 12 schools, as it will expose ideas and innovations from China to campus.
