Nitin Nohria Stepping Down as Dean of Harvard Business School
Nitin Nohria, Dean of Harvard Business School (HBS) since 2010, announced this month that he will step down as Dean at the end of the current academic year.
In a message to students, faculty, staff, and alumni, Nohria said, “Ten years gave us a good run to make progress on our ‘Five I’ priorities,” (HBS’s focus on innovation, intellectual ambition, internationalization, inclusion, and integration). He added, “Serving as Dean has been a privilege for which I am immensely grateful. A decade seems an appropriate duration for this chapter in the School’s history.”
Nitin joined the HBS faculty in 1988, and served in various leadership roles – Chair of the Organizational Behavior Unit, Co-Chair of the Leadership Initiative, and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development – before being appointed Dean. His research focused on human motivation, leadership, corporate transformation and accountability, as well as sustainable economic and human performance. He has written more than a dozen books and many articles.
Drew Faust, Harvard’s President from 2007 to 2018, remarked, “Nitin Nohria has drawn on his expertise and his experience to be an outstanding leader for Harvard Business School. He took to heart the School’s mission of educating leaders who make a difference in the world. Whether launching new pedagogies, investing in the faculty and their research, or building bridges from the Business School to other parts of Harvard, Nitin has positioned HBS well to face the 21st century … It was a privilege to work with him, and I feel fortunate to count him as a friend.”
Among Nitin’s accomplishments during his tenure as Dean are:
* Development and deployment of the experiential FIELD curriculum, to complement HBS’s traditional case-based teaching method
* Expansion and renovation of HBS’s flagship executive-education facilities and programs, including the new Tata Hall and Chao Center, as well as teaching facilities in Shanghai and Mumbai
* Creation and expansion of facilities for entrepreneurship, anchored by the iLab
* Unprecedented outreach to the rest of the University
* Initiation of online learning through HBX and its platform
Nitin will take a sabbatical, before determining what his immediate future holds.
