New IESE Dean Discusses Plans

Franz Heukamp, appointed Dean of IESE Business School in June of this year, began his new job September 1st. He recently spoke with Financial Times about his plans for IESE and the challenge of succeeding Jordi Canals, who is credited with transforming the institution into a top international business school.

Prior to his appointment as Dean, Professor Heukamp was Associate Dean for MBA programs at IESE, where he had worked since 2002. He noted that about 80% of IESE’s MBA students now came from outside Spain, one of the highest levels for any business school. In addition, approximately nine of 10 executive MBA students are non-Spanish. He hopes to continue taking advantage of IESE’s expanding global presence.

Dean Heukamp understands what it means to lead change, due to his experience implementing plans such as the launch of the Executive MBA in São Paulo and a New York module of the Global Executive MBA. “It is not about adding further geographies but deepening our presence in these regions,” he said.

He indicated he would like to address the impact of digitization as well. “We believe that the best learning methodology is personal interaction and discussion in class, but we have also witnessed the benefits of blended and new learning technologies. Combining both worlds, we will continue developing cutting-edge methodologies that allow us to offer the best solution for each educational need.”

Lifelong learning, including encouraging greater enrollment in IESE’s part-time Global Executive MBA, is another of his goals.
