MIT Media Lab Hosts Future of Suburbia Conference

As part of the MIT Center for Advanced Urbanism’s (CAU) multi-year exploration of The Future of Suburbia, the MIT Media Lab is currently hosting (March 31 – April 1, 2016) a Future of Suburbia conference outlining four design frameworks for the future: heterogeneous, experimental, autonomous, and productive.

The conference includes panelists from fields including architecture, design, economics, environment, history and demographics, energy, health, mobility, policy, and urban planning. They are exploring topics such as improving the design and planning of suburbs, new land tenure models, technological innovations and productive systems for self-sufficiency, and how new forms of suburbs evolve over time.

More than 69% of U.S. residents live in suburban areas, and by 2030 an estimated 500,000 square miles of land worldwide will become suburbia, making suburbanization a contemporary phenomenon.
