Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey
Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) provides international professional education in language and culture, global management, human rights and social change, sustainable development, and international security. MIIS prepares managers and executives to engage effectively in multi-cultural and multi-lingual business environments through customized language and cross-cultural training for individuals and groups. Clients can focus on language and intercultural skills that are at the core of successful global business communications such as negotiations, partnership building, networking, meetings and presentation skills, as well as organizational and conflict management in multi-cultural contexts.
Founded in 1955 as the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies, it has since grown and expanded, adding new programs, faculty, and students, and changing its name to the Monterey Institute of International Studies in 1979. Middlebury formally acquired the Institute in 2010, and in January 2015 the Institute was renamed the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. It has a tremendous reputation as a leading international professional graduate school.
In addition to language training, the Institute offers certificate programs, including the Intercultural Competence (ICC) Specialization, which helps students actively understand and possess qualities that contribute to effective communication between individuals or groups of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Participants gain the knowledge and skills to lead and train multicultural teams and sensitively interact with diverse stakeholders. Completion of this certificate program requires 16 credits (10 core credits and six elective credits). Core courses include: Introduction to Intercultural Competence, Intercultural Group Dynamics/Organizations, Power and Identities in Intercultural Contexts, and Multicultural and Multilingual Communication.
For executives interested in learning more, the Institute offers weekend open enrollment programs on a variety of topics:
* Development practice and policy
* Intercultural competence
* International education management
* International environment policy

If desired, the Institute can custom build a program that utilizes their faculty members to address organizational training needs. Working closely with an organization’s leaders, Institute faculty and staff will design and deliver a focused learning experience that enables an organization to optimize its capabilities and implement effective strategies.
Individual training and coaching by faculty members is also available.
