Michael Schrage on Executive Education
Michael Schrage, a prominent thought leader in the field of innovation, has recently written a blog for the Harvard Business Review on the importance of Executive Education. In this blog post, he gives advice to executives on how to get the most out of their own Executive Education experience.
Schrage states that “the single most important thing I’ve learned over a decade of summer studies is that cultivating new capability is more important than better communicating one’s expertise.” He then highlights the seven lessons he believes managers and executives should keep in mind as they pursue professional development. Here is Schrage’s list of most important lessons to remember:
1. Organizational impact matters as much as professional development. The ultimate goal of personal professional development is to improve your organization.
2. Keener introspection facilitates greater external influence. Becoming more self-aware helps you meet your goals.
3. Rethink, repurpose, and renew what we’re already doing. Can simple changes yield greater value?
4. See something differently. Investigate your work from a different perspective.
5. Do something different. Try new things.
6. Measure the difference. How do these differences make the organization more efficient?
7. Build an arc. Ask yourself and your company what’s next?
Michael Schrage is a highly sought-after speaker in the world of Executive Education. He has written books on innovation, collaboration, and creativity, including The Innovator’s Hypothesis: How Cheap Experiments are Worth More than Good Ideas and Serious Play: How the World’s Best Companies Simulate to Innovate. He is a research fellow for the MIT Sloan School’s Center for Digital Business, and is a senior advisor for the MIT Security Studies Program and for the United States government on national security systems innovation. In addition to writing for the Harvard Business Review, Schrage frequently writes for CIO Magazine, Fortune, and MIT’s Technology Review. He also writes for The Conference Board Review.
