McKinsey Academy, offered by McKinsey & Company, management consultants, is now offering online training, competing directly with traditional business schools. McKinsey Academy uses an online platform based on the MIT and Harvard-developed edX software and offers content in three- to five-minute snippets, knowing participants likely are quite busy. There is also an option to watch videos at double speed. McKinsey consultants act as teaching assistants and there is group work, in which participants are divided into teams.

McKinsey Academy courses include:

* McKinsey Management Programme – for rising professionals looking to build leadership and management capabilities
* Unlocking the Potential of Women Programme – for both male and female business leaders seeking ways to recognize and deliver the full potential of women in the workplace
* Future Business Leaders Forum – for next-generation leaders from top global companies for a transformational learning journey

According to the Financial Times, business schools are closely monitoring this new rival as it offers online training to both existing and new clients. Glenn Hubbard Dean of Columbia Business School, comments, “When people ask me where my competition is, McKinsey Academy is on the list.”

Dominique Turpin, President of IMD, suggests consultancies that move into the training sphere will likely face challenges, “The consultancies are not seen as being as neutral as business schools.” Josep Valor, Leader of IESE’s custom executive education, points out that if a company is receiving board-level strategic advice from a consultant, allowing the same company to train executives may be putting too many eggs in one basket. “You may end up being handcuffed by these guys. A number of large organizations do feel that way.”
