From Henry Flagler’s Landmark Hotel to a Premier College
Flagler College, located in historic St. Augustine, Florida, is a small, private residential college offering more than 30 majors and minors. The Hotel Ponce de Leon, built in 1888 by Henry Flagler, is designated as a National Historic Landmark and is now the main building of Flagler College. Having been founded in 1968, the college is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
One of its innovative new programs is the Coastal Environmental Science minor, which familiarizes students with the natural world by “providing a sound foundation of knowledge concerning our planet, diverse Floridian and global ecosystems, natural processes, and ecological sustainability.” Students must complete 16 credits for this minor.
Dr. Ed McGinley, Assistant Professor of Natural Sciences, teaches some of these courses, and is active in researching animals that live in the local estuary, specifically looking at fish, crabs, and squid, with the goal of determining what types of these organisms are in the area, and why they are located where we find them. His classes and research often require students to be out in the water collecting data.
Recently, The Gargoyle, Flagler College’s online student newspaper, won six awards in the Society of Professional Journalists regional 2017 Mark of Excellence Awards, including Best Independent Online Student Publication.
Other winning entries included:
* Katherine Lewin – Feature Photography (Small-school division – schools with 1 – 9,999 students)
* Katherine Lewin – Online News Reporting
The winning entries will compete at the national level among other winners from the Society of Professional Journalism’s 12 regions.
