The School of Media and Communications at Temple University is hosting a Digital Storytelling Boot Camp in November 2015. This two-day program, designed for professional journalists, journalism educators, and journalism students, will be held at Temple’s Mitten Hall and Annenberg Hall.

Sponsored by the Associated Press Media Association (APME), this NewsTrain workshop is designed “to help journalists make smart decisions about the best way to tell a story in a digital framework.” According to Arlene Morgan, assistant dean for external affairs, “The digital training topic was selected by a vote of journalists who represent a cross-section of news outlets. Students will learn time-saving techniques to extract critical information that turns stories into must reads.” In addition, a portion of the program is devoted to teaching how to turn data into a more efficient and powerful reporting tool.

Topics and techniques covered during this program include:

* Producing video, recording sound, and shooting photos with a smartphone

* Writing news for mobile

* Using data to drive enterprise reporting

* Maximizing the use of social media for both reporting and branding

Faculty members include Paul Cheung, director of interactive and digital news production for The Associated Press; Kathy Kieliszewski, visuals director for the Detroit Free Press; Theodore Kim, senior staff editor at The New York Times; Ron Nixon, Washington correspondent for The New York Times and a former training director for IRE; and Carla Zanoni, executive emerging media editor at The Wall Street Journal.
