Culinary Institute of America Celebrating 70 Years, Copia Property Opening This Year in Napa Valley
The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), which opened as the New Haven Restaurant Institute in New Haven, Connecticut in 1946 to train returning World War II veterans in the culinary arts, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this week. The school changed its name to the Culinary Institute of America in 1951 and relocated to Hyde Park, New York in 1972.
The first and only school of its kind in the United States, it has become the world’s premier culinary college. The school offers education programs that emphasize hands-on learning in small class settings, including subjects such as nutritional cooking and wine studies. The CIA introduced an associate degree program in culinary arts in 1971, an associate degree program in baking and pastry arts in 1990, and the first-ever bachelor’s degrees in culinary arts management or baking and pastry arts management in 1993. Since then, it has expanded to offer bachelor’s degrees in culinary science and applied food studies. The institute also offers management studies.
The college’s newest facility, The Culinary Institute of America at Copia, in Napa Valley, opens in the Fall of 2016. The CIA acquired the property in November 2015 and, upon reopening, it will provide visitors an array of food and wine offerings. Victor Scargle will lead the culinary program as the Executive Chef for the CIA at Copia. Facilities include a 100-seat restaurant with outdoor patio, retail store, and theaters for demonstrations and classes. It will be available for hosting weddings, corporate events, and other functions as well.
