UNICON, a global consortium of more than 100 business school executive education organizations, recently held its flagship Executive Education Directors’ Conference at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Although established only 15 years ago, the Gordon Institute of Business Science has become the highest Financial Times-ranking business school in South Africa. Individuals who attended this conference were exposed to experiences designed to create “contextual intelligence,” including learning journeys to “contrast” encounters that provided a sense of the social and leadership challenges emerging markets face: poverty, educational neglect, and failing city services. The major takeaway of this event was that local adaptation of general leader truths is the true measure of leadership acumen. The challenge for executive education organizations and business schools is to weave contextual intelligence into executive education programs.
