Jyoti Chopra, Global Head of Diversity and Inclusion at BNY Mellon, recently spoke with Financial Times about her job and the challenges she faces, as well as her biggest business influencers and the best advice she ever received.

Jyoti says that what she enjoys most about her job is driving change and cultural transformation through people and serving as an advocate for gender parity and diversity. Every day is different and allows her to touch professional lives of many individuals. The most difficult part of her job is dealing with conflict or controversy, but dealing with unexpected situations and overcoming obstacles are rites of passage. It is essential to learn from past mistakes and not be afraid to put oneself in tough situations.

The biggest business influencers in Jyoti’s life include Gerald Hassell, Chairman and Chief Executive of BNY Mellon; Karen Peetz, BNY Mellon President (and the only female president of a major Wall Street firm); and James Gorman, Chief Executive of Morgan Stanley. She points out that “mind over matter” is one of the best pieces of advice she received, regarding a particularly challenging EMBA course. Another piece of advice she finds helpful is “invest in the success of others,” which helps keep her grounded and focused on building up others and contributing to broader efforts. Finally, “proper planning prevents poor performance,” is good advice.

Jyoti was raised in North London but attended New York University, and had worked at the United Nations, Merrill Lynch, and Deloitte. She currently divides her time between Manhattan, New York, and Princeton, New Jersey.
