Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art Celebrating 75th Anniversary

 

 

 

 

 

 

One of the great museums of the United States is in Central Florida, in Winter Park, bordering Orlando. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, located on this tourist destination’s main street, Park Avenue, is celebrating its 75^th anniversary this year. Dedicated predominantly to the extraordinary artistry and unique career of the early 20^th century designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, the museum also houses American art pottery and late 19^th– and early 20^th-century American paintings, graphics, and decorative art.

The Morse Museum opened its doors on February 17, 1942, culminating an arduous and exemplary philanthropic campaign led with absolute dedication by Hugh and Jeannette McKean. Hugh McKean was a professor, later President of the great local college, Rollins, when Jeannette, granddaughter of the Winter Park pioneer Charles Morse, founded the museum. She chose him to be the museum director, thereby setting a unique dual track: 1) a profound education mission for the museum, and 2) a great marriage partnership.

The museum is celebrating its 75^th anniversary with a variety of events and programs.

Events include:

* Exhibition Opening, Tuesday, October 18, 2016 – Celebrating 75 Years – Pathways of American Art at the Morse Museum

* Open House, February 1 – 28, 2017 – Free admission to the galleries

* Highlight of Cell Phone Audio Tour, Wednesday, February 1, 2017 – The Museum-highlights audio tour, accessible through cell phones, offers information and history on 40 objects in the Morse collection.

* 75^th Anniversary Reception, Friday, February 17, 2017 – Public celebration with champagne and live music on the date the museum opened it doors in 1942
