Business & Environment Initiative at Harvard Business School

One of Harvard Business School’s initiatives and featured research topics is Business and Environment, which explores the connection between the natural environment and the business world. The current focus is on corporate environmental strategy; operations and reporting; sustainable cities and infrastructure; the role of government and environmental policy; clean energy generation and demand-side energy efficiency; and the effective management of natural resources essential to human prosperity.

The Business and Environment Initiative (BEI) mission is to deepen business leaders’ understanding of today’s environmental challenges and to assist them in developing effective solutions by helping leaders think clearly about the design of economic and political institutions that enable firms and societies to thrive while maintaining the physical and biological systems on which they ultimately depend. In addition to conducting research on topics affecting the environment, BEI develops cases and other materials for MBA and Executive Education programs and organizes conferences and events that bring attention to environmental problems.

Professor Rebecca Henderson is BEI Co-Director and the John and Natty McArthur University Professor at Harvard University, where she has a joint appointment at the Harvard Business School in the General Management and Strategy units. Her research explores how organizations respond to large-scale technological shifts, most recently in regard to energy and the environment. Previously, Henderson was Eastman Kodak Professor of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School, where she ran the strategy group and taught courses in strategy, sustainability, and technology strategy. She received an undergraduate degree from MIT in mechanical engineering and a doctorate from Harvard in business economics. Leading Sustainable Change: An Organizational Perspective, edited jointly with Ranjay Gulati and Michael Tushman, is her most-recent publication.
